UT Tyler defends Culshaw as champion of free speech |
|
UT Tyler math professor, Dr. Rebecca Culshaw, recently used her UT credentials to promote her book, a ludicrous theory that HIV and AIDS are unrelated. According to Dr Culshaw, HIV does not cause AIDS, and the number of cases of AIDS has not increased in 20 years. Dr Culshaw also claims that neither HIV nor AIDS actually exist, and encourages patients to stop taking antiretroviral (ARV) medications, calling them "poisonous." If you're interested in a summary of the erroneous claims made in her book, check this page, on the AIDSTruth website. |

“This is ludicrous! One may as well promote the right to teach the Flying Spaghetti Monster as a legitimate explanation for the universe. I'm terribly disappointed. They need to be publicly embarrassed by this - the problem then being giving effective airtime to the whole existence of the denialist position.” — Nick Bennett |

All of this is major news for thinking citizens of Tyler, since East Texas has become one of the few places in our country where such sentiments are so publicly endorsed. For more information, read a letter to UT Health Center President Kirk A. Calhoun here. For a complete analysis of Dr. Culshaw’s campaign of misinformation, you can find an excellent paper by KEN WITWER, entitled “Science Outsold?: Correcting the falsehoods of Science Sold Out: Does HIV Really Cause AIDS?” here. Of course, some authors consider any publicity good for sales — and that’s the only reason I can think of that anyone would possibly make such ridiculous claims as Dr. Culshaw has made. And all of this only goes to make for a sad day in Tyler, and a dangerous day for her unsuspecting students…. — Troy Carlyle |

The AIDSTruth website also includes a short list of other “AIDS Denialists” around the world, along with a longer list of former denialists who have succumbed to the “nonexistent” disease. Apparently, a university position does not protect a person from going insane. It is unfortunate, however, that the University itself (UT Tyler) is backing Culshaw as a champion of free speech. |

UPDATE—July 18, 2007
I just received correspondence from Ken Witwer, of AidsTruth.org (through Johns Hopkins University) and Dr Jeanne Bergman, of The Center for HIV Law and Policy, in New York City regarding this web page.
As Dr Bergman points out, such irresponsible publishing is dangerous since,
“people stop worrying about safe sex (because they believe HIV doesn't exist, or isn't harmful, or can't be sexually transmitted, they stop seeing their doctors or taking ARVs, and they become highly vulnerable to all sorts of quackery. Worst of all, they get sick and die, because neither the virus nor their immune systems care what they believe in or don't.”
We’re working with the medical reporter at the Tyler Courier-Times-Telegraph in an attempt, as Dr Bergman has suggested, to reinvigorate this issue. I’d like to ask the University of Texas to publicly distance itself from Dr Culshaw’s bizarre position. We would further request that the University formally require her to cease and desist the use of her University credentials in the propagation of such life-endangering claims. Please feel free to join me in contacting your friends and acquaintances in radio, television and printed publishing to put an end to this medically dangerous and irresponsible campaign of misinformation! —Troy Carlyle |

Hello Troy,
and thanks for your excellent website! It's very well done. The site map and background graphics are particularly beautiful.
I found tridd.com because of your kind and informative reference to the aidstruth website in context of Dr. Rebecca Culshaw at UT Tyler…
Thanks again and keep up the great work!

UPDATED August 28, 2008 (update added below) |
|
“I received a letter from the Provost at the University of Texas at Tyler today. The administration there is wholeheartedly supporting Culshaw's right to continue expressing her denialist views, apparently even as a UT Tyler faculty member. According to the Provost, Culshaw's "opinions" on HIV and AIDS are, in the university's view, equivalent in merit to our "opinions" on the subject. Pardon my pessimism, but how can science survive in such an environment? Outright lies should not be tolerated in academia. But that's just my opinion…” — unsigned |

UPDATE—September 24, 2007
Baylor University distances itself from “Intelligent Design” teachings
Baylor University recently took down a website that had been published by their own Professor Marks. The website used university resources to promote “intelligent design.” You can read the full article about the episode here.
The university used the rational that Professor Marks failed to “issue a disclaimer that [his] particular view does not necessarily express the view of Baylor University.”
Why is it that Baylor University can remove an “intelligent design” website produced by Professor Marks, yet UT Tyler cannot bring themselves to distance the publications of their own Professor Culshaw, who teaches that AIDS medications should not be taken because AIDS does not exist?
Baylor officials have said the site was removed for procedural reasons, namely the absence of a disclaimer separating the university from involvement in Marks’ research.
Professor’s Culshaw’s teachings are far more life-threatening, having led to at least one instance of an AIDS patient refusing treatment, yet UT Tyler officials have so far refused to take any action distancing themselves from Professor Culshaw’s position.
It pains me that the East Texas area seems to be so far into our own denial of the existence of AIDS here, that we would apparently rather believe these outrageous teachings than consider that Culshaw might be working with an agenda of her own.
… and just for the record… I happen to be a big fan of academic freedom — but I also believe in responsible, truth-based education.

UPDATE—December 7, 2007
Culshaw strikes again
UT Tyler’s Rebecca Culshaw, posting as “RebeccaVeronica” has erroneously told an HIV infected woman with a 3 month old daughter that it’s safe for her to breastfeed.
Unfortunately, UTHC continues to turn a blind eye to this behavior.

UPDATE—August 28, 2008
The end of an era?
According to our source, Rebecca Culshaw may no longer be working at UT Tyler or (to our knowledge at this point) any university.
The news comes as mysterious and anticlimactic, mainly because we cannot seem to get independent verification she has even left. I can only presume, however, that in the end, her own untenable position damaged her tenure.
Then again, I’ve noticed that this page appears among the first in the list in web searches, so the page you’re viewing may have played some role… It is unlikely we will ever know for sure - but then, that’s often the case in grassroots activism like this.
Thanks to all of those who have sent letters, and to all those who keep up the struggle for life & liberty. If you have any further details on this story, or can enlighten us further as to Culshaw’s present or future status, please send a message to troy@tridd.com.
Thanks, & all the best — Troy Carlyle |
