The impossible dream:

that we could ever believe without acting

by Troy Carlyle

I’m upset this morning at the news of yet another slaying of abortion doctor, George Tiller, in a church in Wichita, Kansas yesterday. Immediately, the right-wing press went to work to distance themselves from the act of terrorism. An Associated Press Article included the

Tridd dot com is dedicated to the gay / straight allies community in Texas… and also to the Texas HIV+ community.

I’d also like to welcome our friends who happen to live outside the great state of Texas.

This site was developed after conversations with many who fear mistreatment because of their sexual identities. It also answers a gap in services that I discovered in East Texas AIDS service orgs, which is namely the unconditional acceptance of alternative lifestyles and a primary mission to build a nurture the LGBT / straight ally community.

My perspective is unique… after living in places as diverse as Sacramento, CA, Colorado Springs, CO, Wichita, KS and coastal North Carolina, I can say that East Texas, as a region and as a culture, is one of the least welcoming to the gay community, and the least understanding of HIV needs and issues of any other region I’ve seen.

On this site, you’ll find a user’s forum, where you can meet other people who are going through the same kinds of issues as you.

This website was created in May of 2007, so come back often. As more people create forum profiles and voice their opinions… the more useful and powerful this site will be for all of us.

I’m not some huge corporation — you can read more about me here.

I promise to never charge a fee to use this site. I’m in this for the right reasons, as I hope the rest of us are.

So whether you’re interested in activism or sharing problems or getting or giving advice… you’ve found the right place.

Peace & love

  Troy Carlyle

My own private Memorial Day

Remembering a way of life

It was 1989. God, that was twenty years ago. My life was perfect, really. I was an Air Force Captain, nickname “Magellan.” My fellow officers picked me as the best in Squadron Officer School, which was basically a popularity contest. I had received two Air Medals for courage under fire. I was a senior instructor navigator in one of the most top secret units in the country. Hell, we didn’t even answer to our North Carolina base commander, but to a tiny little office in Virginia, part of the National Security Administration. We were Air Force spooks. In 1989, I had been around the world so many times, I had developed a sort of instinctual feeling for how long it might take to walk it. Yet I was young, only twenty-eight years old. Five years earlier I had graduated from the Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, though I was never much of a conformist. As a cadet, I filmed a subversive satire on cadet life. The officers in charge didn’t even know the film existed until I showed it with some fanfare to the cadets exactly one night before graduation. To my knowledge, no one has tried anything like that before or since. I guess you could say I’ve always been a free thinker.

Since the Tyler Bobcats “teamed up” with the Dallas Bulls in Austin, it was decided that we would be called (only for the Austin trip) the BULL CATS.

The “BULL CATS” did really well in Austin. We played against a fully filled San Antonio Diablos first. They beat us by one point. I think if we would have had more regular guys there we could have whipped them up.

The second game was against the Austin Rattlers, which is mostly a lesbian team that has only been playing together for about a month. We beat them by one or two touchdowns. I have no doubt that they will be an awesome team to play once they practice more.

The third game was against the Houston Hurricanes. VERY TOUGH TEAM. They had more of their regular players in attendance, and they beat us by two touchdowns. But, we did score against them and held up pretty well considering the experience they have on that team.

The hydration specialist (Gene, aka Super Genie) filled in for me as center some of the time. Thomas (aka smokie) ran his tail off chasing the Quarterbacks. Nathan (aka squirrel) with his fancy gloves was giving them hell from the slot back position. Derrick (aka pepie) was smoking some fools up and down the field. Jeffery (aka wheels) was making the other teams scratch there heads in wonder how to keep up with him. Gregg (aka Iceland) played running back. He proved to be an asset as a linebacker as well. Special thanks to the Bulls, Todd and Coach Becker. Todd scored some of our touchdowns and without Becker we would not have had a tournament at all. Becker severed as our Coach and Quarterback. Great job guys!!

All in all we had a great time. Some of us found the best part of the trip was off the field. The night life of Austin or splashing in the pool with the Diablos. Some of us enjoyed just getting out of town. Most of us enjoyed all the teams having a great time together. The Common bonds we all had and the love of sports that we did not enjoy as children. With this kenship in our hearts we found the fun in dehydration.

Austin was running a temp close to 100 degrees that day. The tournament was nonstop, one game after the other. From 11 am till 3:30 pm. We where tired, hot, sunburned, dirty, and happy. We worked hard in the sun and it was all worth it, once it was over. Yet we have Three days of this schedule in D.C. EVERYONE is a real champion that plays in that tournment.

I cant wait to get to San Antonio July 25th and do it all over again.

Loves ya East Texas

Check out Troy’s book here.

Before he bought a blues bar, Troy was in the advertising business back in North Carolina. He was the lead man for a huge Grand Opening celebration for Jeff Gordon’s first car dealership. Here's a photo with Jeff taken during the event, circa 1998.
